LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Translate this Page!"When will we see, their likes again."Evolution, Change, Creates… (MW. Ocht. 2004)-The Editor, Prof. Jack E. Harris. reminds us, with great dexterity, of much uniqueness in Nature: that the larvae Tebanus, an African horse fly exploits the same crack- blunting-effect as the engineer & designer's "bored hole" or the metallurgist's "soft precipitate", that the forest fire detecting Jewel Beetle's amazing Heat Sensor has a Range of 50kms! Other also rans mentioned are the explosive Bombardier Beetle of the Bachus genus, and the short-lived Aussie frog "Rheobatrachus Vitellinius. Last but not least my unforgettable, "McIntosh" the Bowler-hatted beetle, a Namibian desert tippler, sorry Oxford Uni.Zoologist & QinetiQ who mimic water capture in arid conditions! Tosh's is having a relaxing future due to ready-for-use steelwire net! Full refs. the Guardian book review of R. Dawkins', "The Ancestor's Tale-A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Life." Footnote: In our press releases on mimicry, recall with care, the friendly and helpful Oriental, Japanese et al. architectural approach: "the wisdom of the continuing research for harmony with Nature", so dramatic in their part of our planet.

"Nullius in Verba - On the words of no one"
So check things out for yourself-
BRUTE FORCE and IGNORANCE the ENEMY « WITHIN? » MORE & MORE & MORE DILEMAS require DOCTORS CARE.
From J. Alexander (27/11/2000 & Ocht. 2004)
The doctor of philosophy’s (PhD) dilemma is a theme first coined, to my knowledge, by Jack. E. Harris who edits Interdisciplinary Science Review and animates the “Material Matters” monthly column in Materials World both published by I.O.M. Communications. I contribute to this theme upon occasion.
The latest attack on drug abuse in sport has chosen the US cycling champion Lance Armstrong, winner of the most coveted cycling event in the world “ Le Tour de France”. This gives me an opportunity to extend my enquiries beyond PhD to MD domains, not forgetting the role played by their equivalents in journalism. It is not quite clear via mass media (TV) whether Lance is being accused before or after his fight with cancer. This is a very important issue, since we can enquire, legitimately, whether or not this undoubtedly great champion has contributed significantly to something perhaps even greater, the discovery of a new and improved method to successfully combat, this crippling, often mortal, human disfunctioning. If so, Lance, has certainly combined natural and artificial means from which important new insights may be gained either of negative or positive effects. Could his critics be acting for altruistic motives? This too remains to be determined. Whatever, if as is often postulated, stress, is a severely aggravating factor in cancer, perhaps almost a root cause, it should be avoided especially in the Armstrong case. Difficult when stress, management and mismanagement, appears to have become a source of widespread use and abuse in this only too common form of human intercourse? In psychology and biology for example my local library’s 1984 Britannica defines “stress” as “strain”! or interference that disturbs the functioning of an organism. To contribute further to fuzzy logic, physical stresses listed in the rapid reference section are cold, heat and noise. Under psychological stresses are listed; frustration, deprivation and conflict. Although I have had the pleasure of reading again the Intl. Herald Tribune in which these latter notions are given substance, I still wonder what this all means?
Means, meaning, mean almost the same word! Are they stresses or are they strains? Lets see what the physical and engineering sciences have to offer. The Britannica’s rapid reference section defines stress as force per unit area i.e. pressure, there are normal (right angled) stresses and shear stresses depending upon the direction of the applied force(s), yield stresses and elastic stresses which indicate the end result, the latter only being recommended in the case of racked bodies and minds. Who does what doctor? I hope you find my comments stimulating, more - life saving.
